What We Can Do to Protect Your Child's Teeth from Cavities

A baby's first primary teeth typically begin to emerge around six months of age. Once teeth appear, protecting them from tooth decay becomes an ongoing concern. However, babies cannot care for their own mouths, so cavity prevention truly depends on the cooperation of parents and family members.

At Tomoko Dental Clinic in Chuo-ku, Osaka, we provide dedicated support—from a professional standpoint—to parents and guardians working to protect their young children's teeth from decay. Our pediatric dentistry services cover cavity treatment as well as preventive care.

Cavity Treatment and Preventive Procedures for Young Children

In our pediatric dentistry practice, except in cases requiring urgent treatment, we do not begin procedures immediately upon a child's first visit. This approach prioritizes giving children time to become comfortable with the clinic environment.

With more families where both parents work, many find it difficult to visit during weekday daytime hours. Our clinic is open until 7:30 p.m. on weekdays and until 4:30 p.m. on Saturdays, so you are welcome to choose a time that fits your schedule.

We invite young children to visit every two months for primary tooth check-ups, and we provide treatment or preventive care tailored to each child's individual pace. At each visit, we set a goal together with the parent or guardian and work toward achieving it.

For children who are old enough to brush their own teeth, we provide guidance on effective brushing techniques and methods suited to their individual tooth alignment. As parental finishing brushing remains important through approximately the middle years of primary school, we also offer advice to parents and guardians.

Fluoride supports remineralization—the process by which minerals that have leached from tooth structure are reincorporated into the tooth. Applying fluoride to the tooth surface helps strengthen enamel, making teeth more resistant to decay. Regular application is expected to provide better preventive benefit over time.

Sealant is a procedure in which the grooves of cavity-prone teeth (the biting surfaces of back teeth) are filled in advance with dental composite resin to prevent the accumulation of plaque that is difficult to remove by brushing. Sealants gradually wear down over time, so periodic checks are necessary.

Just as a balanced diet supports overall health, food choices also play a role in dental health. We explain to children in an easy-to-understand way which foods are beneficial for teeth and which require extra care afterward, helping them learn about dental health. We also offer dietary advice to parents and guardians.
