Today, we would like to introduce a treatment case

involving the removal of a torus

located on the lingual side (inner tongue side) of the mandible,

performed comfortably under sedation therapy,

for a female patient in her 50s.

The patient we are introducing

had previously received treatment

at Seoul Hunhunhan Dental Clinic

and returned, satisfied with her prior experience.

She had become aware of the torus

during an intraoral photo taken at a previous visit,

and was seeking removal as it was encroaching on her tongue space

and occasionally causing sores while eating.

Q. What is a torus?

A torus is a condition in which part of the jawbone

protrudes outward.

Because it appears as a lump inside the mouth,

many people worry it may be cancer.

However, it is a normal anatomical structure

that can develop due to chewing forces,

so it is advisable to review chewing habits.

This patient also had a notably strong bite force

and parafunctional habits including bruxism and jaw clenching.

If the size is small, many people live with it without any particular treatment.

However, removal may be considered when:

✔ The torus is gradually increasing in size,

✔ The tongue frequently contacts it, causing repeated sores,

✔ Eating is uncomfortable, or

✔ It interferes with prosthetic treatment or denture fabrication.

As the patient had significant anxiety about the procedure itself,

the torus removal was performed

under sedation therapy.

Rather than making an unnecessarily large incision,

only the necessary area was incised

to help minimize post-operative discomfort.

Careful consideration was given

to reducing swelling, pain,

and discomfort during recovery.

Because the procedure was performed under sedation,

the patient had no memory of the process

and expressed satisfaction,

saying she was able to go through treatment very comfortably. :)

At the follow-up check the day after surgery,

no notable issues were found,

and the patient reported

no particular discomfort.

After the procedure, a surgical splint was placed

to provide more stable protection of the wound site.

The splint helps protect the surgical area from external stimuli,

reduces bleeding and swelling,

and supports more stable wound recovery.

The surgical site has since healed stably,

and we plan to continue regular follow-up monitoring

to check for any recurrence of the torus

and the overall oral condition. ^^

This concludes the case presentation

of a patient who underwent torus removal

performed comfortably under sedation therapy.

Torus removal is not simply the removal of bone;

it is a minor intraoral surgical procedure

that requires a thorough understanding

of the anatomical structures of the mouth

and careful consideration of the surrounding tissues.
