a resin build-up case

that prioritizes natural tooth preservation.

CASE 1

This patient visited our clinic

for an overall oral examination.

Cavities were found in several teeth,

and among them, the upper-left first molar

had developed decay on the proximal (interproximal) surface.

When proximal decay occurs

between adjacent teeth,

inlay treatment is often considered

given the location.

However, we explained to the patient

the option of resin build-up treatment,

a more conservative approach

aiming to minimize tooth reduction,

and carefully removed the decay.

Before placing the resin,

a 'band' was inserted

between the teeth.

For proximal cavity treatment

where teeth contact each other,

an adequate matrix system is necessary.

It serves as a substitute for the side surface

removed due to decay,

and also helps restore the contact point

between adjacent teeth,

making it an essential tool

for a well-finished result.

With the teeth separated

so they would not stick together,

the 'resin build-up' treatment was performed

by incrementally layering the material

from the inside out.

Q. What is Resin Build-Up?

To illustrate simply with a photo,

after removing the cavity,

the treatment proceeds through

the steps shown above. :)

Our teeth consist of a hard outer layer called enamel

and a softer inner layer called dentin.

Resin build-up is a technique

that takes this layered structure into account

and builds up the material

one layer at a time.

In particular, when decay is deep

and close to the nerve,

or when the side of a tooth is damaged,

prosthetic options such as inlays

require removing a certain thickness of healthy tooth structure

to ensure a uniform thickness for the restoration.

If resin build-up is applicable,

however, treatment can proceed

in a direction that preserves the tooth

without unnecessary reduction.

* Please note that resin build-up is not suitable

for every situation.

The most appropriate approach

must be determined by the clinician

with careful consideration of the oral condition.

The space between the teeth was filled

so no gap remained,

and the rounded contour blending naturally

with the adjacent tooth was carefully refined

for a natural, tooth-like finish.

After completing the restoration,

we also carefully checked the occlusion

using articulating paper

to confirm comfortable biting.

This was a Gwangjin-gu cavity treatment case

in which proximal interproximal decay

was treated with resin build-up

rather than an inlay,

preserving the natural tooth.

CASE 2

The second patient

had cavities in multiple areas

and received treatment at our clinic.

Among the affected teeth,

the lower-left first molar also

had proximal decay between adjacent teeth,

similar to the first case.

The inner area appeared dark,

and a plan was made

to preserve the natural tooth as much as possible

through resin build-up treatment.

A rubber dam was also placed

for thorough moisture control.

Q. What is a Rubber Dam?

The oral cavity is always moist and contains saliva,

and resin as a material

is highly sensitive to moisture.

Therefore, by using a rubber dam (the green sheet)

to isolate only the treatment area

and keep the tooth completely separated

from saliva and bacteria,

a well-finished result can be expected.
